ZDF Enterprises WWII documentary Inside Japan’s War starts production

19-08-2021
It is the first major international documentary to explore World War II from Japan’s perspective, the fierce Japanese-American battles and the militarization of it’s society. The four-part series (4x60’) from ZDF Enterprises begins filming this month, produced by Wildbear Entertainment.

The series begins at the start of Hirohito’s rule in the mid 20s and takes viewers right through to the end of World War II, when the country’s empire dissolved and the government changed into a democracy. The conflict between China and Japan is often regarded as the beginning of World War II in Asia which ultimately led to the war against the USA. Japan’s fervent nationalism, the build-up of its military power and its political structure all played a part in leading the country to their surprise attack on Pearl Harbour in December 1941.

Raif Rueckauer, VP ZDFE.unscripted, ZDF Enterprises, said: 'Production, originally due to start earlier this year, was delayed due to the pandemic however that worked to our advantage as we discovered rare archive material. An exciting find that will add even more depth to the series making it the most comprehensive documentary of Japan’s World War II'.

Along with expert statements, archive images and film, the letters, diaries and interviews with Japanese and other Asian witnesses to the war gives Inside Japan’s War a very personal view of what it was like to live through these tumultuous times. The blockades, a growing awareness as the propaganda fails to deliver its promises, the bombing of Japan all take its toll on its citizens as the Empire collapses.
