The Japanese powerhouse brings the social experiment "Majority Rules" to Lisbon alongside innovative game shows and culinary formats as it strengthens its global distribution and strategic creative partnerships.

Nippon TV, Japan’s prominent multiplatform entertainment entity, has confirmed its participation in the inaugural Content Europe 2026 with a robust slate of unscripted formats developed by its in-house production arm, Gyokuro Studio. Head of Gyokuro Studio, Ken Akiyama, emphasized the studio's commitment to crafting innovative formats that resonate across borders, ranging from psychological experiments to the family-friendly studio games that have become a signature of the company. The executive noted that the studio is actively seeking to drive creative partnerships during the event in Lisbon, aiming to connect with European partners to bring these bold concepts to local screens.

The lineup is spearheaded by the social experiment titled Majority Rules, which originally aired on Nippon TV in February 2026 and has already generated significant buyer interest following early previews. This format isolates thirteen strangers in a warehouse for eighteen days, forcing them to govern every aspect of their lives through a binary popular vote that controls daily routines and eliminations. Yoko Takashima, Associate Managing Director of Content Business and Distribution at Nippon TV, highlighted that the format’s power lies in its simplicity and the psychological tension triggered by instant voting. The project is currently being offered to global buyers, with a strategic partnership already in place with Blue Ant Studios to drive its expansion into the North American market.

In addition to the flagship social experiment, Nippon TV is introducing two fresh concepts designed for broad audience appeal: The Balance and Cooking Rush!. The former is a family-oriented game show that creates a level playing field for contestants of all ages by focusing on the universal skill of physical balance, requiring teamwork and concentration under intense pressure. Conversely, Cooking Rush! redefines the culinary competition genre by incorporating a sushi-style conveyor belt system where teams of chefs produce dishes at high speed. The winner is determined simply by the volume of plates consumed by a panel of twenty-four judges, providing an instantly understandable and highly visual judging process that breaks away from traditional culinary critique.

Since its inception in June of the previous year, Gyokuro Studio has rapidly expanded its portfolio to include a variety of successful genres. The current lineup also features the recently launched Cash or Splash!, the physical game show Mega Catch, and the reality series Secret Little Assistant, which saw its debut at MIPCOM 2025. This comprehensive selection underscores Nippon TV’s strategic push to export high-concept Japanese entertainment to European and global broadcasters, reinforcing its reputation as a leading provider of adaptable and engaging unscripted content in an increasingly competitive international market.
