Deep Fusion Films explores if OpenAI's latest update could help win the next commission?
Christian Darkin, Head of Creative AI, Deep Fusion Film'This update elevates the AI from the level of a high-schooler to that of a PhD student in many areas. It's going to be a game-changer for the media industries' - Christian Darkin, Head of Creative Artificial Intelligence at Deep Fusion Films.
OpenAI has today unveiled a potential secret weapon for the industry - ChatGPT-oI - the latest iteration of OpenAI's LLM (Large Language Model)—a significant upgrade to its conversational AI model.
A Quantum Leap in AI Capabilities
ChatGPT-o1 introduces advanced strategic thinking and planning abilities, moving beyond generating isolated responses to crafting coherent narratives and complex content structures. This evolution allows the AI to simulate a "stream of consciousness," enabling more nuanced and sophisticated content creation. But perhaps most excitingly, this strategic 'thinking' comes with the potential for ChatGPT-o1 to offer bold new suggestions for how to win commissions, monetise your IP and maximise your profits.
'It’s the difference between saying the first thing that comes into your head, and taking a moment to consider what you’re going to say - ChatGPT now thinks before it speaks, and that's a big step forward', says Christian Darkin,
Implications for Broadcasting and Production
The broadcasting industry stands to benefit immensely from ChatGPT-o1's enhanced capabilities in many ways. With this new model Chat GPT o1 can offer 'outside the box' thinking and advice on innovative methods of IP exploitation and financials.
It is an advancement on how the industry usually uses ChatGPT - content development. AI has long been used in content ideation and development but it is frequently felt a little sloppy. This new version AI can assist not just in expanding on concepts but it can now move to structuring programme-length content, streamlining the pre-production process even further. Additionally, it is yet another progression in efficiency gains; automating routine tasks allows professionals to focus on higher-level creative and strategic work.
'We've already started integrating ChatGPT-o1 into many of our pipelines', Darkin shares. 'Early indications suggest this will revolutionise content creation, especially in editorial planning, thinking through the structure of content, imagining and planning narrative-arcs and following emotional journeys'.
While the technological advancements are promising, they come with ethical considerations that the industry must address. Perhaps the most concerning of all is the persistent issues OpenAI has with transparency. Along with the company's lack of openness about training data, their decision to keep the AI's "chain of thought" hidden raises concerns about accountability and trust.
'Up to now, ChatGPT has been a 'black box,' and that's been a worry', Darkin notes. 'Not having access to the AI's reasoning process presents risks. What if it makes a basic mistake that informs its thinking? What if it intentionally, or unintentionally manipulates or misinforms the user?'
To balance some of these problems the media bodies, including PACT & Equity, working with Deep Fusion’s Co-Founder Benjamin Field, have worked hard to place guidelines for responsibly integrating AI to avoid replacing human creativity and judgement entirely. Along with being unsure as to whose creative talents have been used to teach ChatGPT-o1 how to do what it does, this latest release raises some questions about whether adopting streamlined practices removes opportunities for junior roles.
Through all this, Deep Fusion Films offers the following guidance to broadcasters and production companies alike as to how to approach the integration of ChatGPT-o1 responsibly.
1. Promote Transparency: Advocate for access to the AI's decision-making processes to ensure content integrity and trustworthiness.
2. Develop Ethical Frameworks: Each production company should have a set of AI guiding principles that prioritises ethical considerations and societal impact. These principles should align with other published guidelines.
3. Invest in Training: Equip teams with the skills to work alongside AI tools effectively, ensuring that human oversight remains central.
4. Encourage Collaboration: Use AI to complement human creativity, not replace it. Foster environments where AI assists in idea generation while humans drive final decisions.
'We're at a pivotal moment where AI can enhance our industry in unprecedented ways', concludes Darkin. 'By focusing on ethical use and understanding the technology deeply, we can unlock new possibilities without compromising our values. It's essential for industry leaders to engage in open dialogue about these changes and work collaboratively to shape a future that benefits everyone. As always, our focus at Deep Fusion is not about doing things that humans can already do well, but on exploring new possibilities and things that could never have been done before'. Darkin emphasises. 'While ChatGPT-01 offers incredible possibilities, we need to be mindful of transparency and accountability'.
