CJ ENM launches The Wedding War, created by mega-hit creators of Physical: 100 and Steel Troops
Engaged couples on a captivating journey to prove their love and trust, aiming for marriage, amidst the challenges of modern relationships and financial pressures.Leading entertainment company CJ ENM has officially announced the imminent launch of its highly anticipated survival non-scripted show, titled 'The Wedding War,' scheduled to premiere on July 2nd. Co-created by acclaimed mega-hit creators Lee Won-woong, renowned for his success in the military survival genre with 'Steel Troops,' and Kang Sook-kyung, who captivated global audiences with 'Physical: 100,' the show has been generating substantial excitement since its early stages of production.
The collaboration between the two esteemed creators, known for their expertise in crafting compelling survival programs, has resulted in the creation of a highly awaited survival mega-show that has already garnered tremendous anticipation from fans worldwide.
Commissioned by tvN, CJ ENM’s affiliate No.1 K-content channel, 'The Wedding War' takes engaged couples from various backgrounds on a transformative journey to prove their trust and love, all with the ultimate goal of marriage. Despite receiving applications from over 500 couples, only ten were selected, representing a diverse range in terms of age, nationality, and reasons for their love. Among them are couples seeking a second chance at marriage, long-term school sweethearts, couples who quickly embraced cohabitation, and those whose bond deepened through caregiving following a life-altering accident. Each couple brings forth a truly unique and remarkable story.
The initial teaser of the show captures the glimpses of engaged couples in wedding attire, including participants from previous Korean dating shows. As the teaser unfolds, the couples face intense struggles, battling physical challenges and undergoing revealing lie detector tests, intensifying viewer curiosity.
The local title '2억9천:결혼전쟁,' derived from 290 million KRW (approx. USD 225,000), reflects current trends and has sparked interest, given that insufficient funds for marriage is the leading cause of the declining marriage rate according to a 2022 survey by Statistics Korea, making discussions and content production related to marriage more prevalent as it becomes a personal choice rather than an obligatory milestone.
Creator Lee Won-woong aims to address the complexities surrounding the declining marriage rate, acknowledging that discussions about marriage have escalated significantly and that financial concerns are often cited as the main factor. With 'The Wedding War', Lee intends to portray the diverse nature of human relationships and love among couples who willingly gather to pursue marriage in a society where being single is prevalent.
Regardless of individual views on marriage, the show promises to deliver sincerity and emotional impact that transcends personal values. However, the production team faced unexpected challenges and encountered misconceptions about the participating couples' love and determination. As love unfolds in unpredictable ways, the show provides a glimpse into the intricate and emotional experiences of this era, surpassing initial expectations.
Sehee Jang, Head of International Marketing at CJ ENM, expressed her anticipation for the show, stating, ‘The concept of 'The Wedding War' resonates not only in Korea but also globally, attracting immense interest and expectations from international fans. As fans worldwide are curious about Korean marriage culture and are eager to know more, we have been receiving continuous inquiries from overseas broadcasting companies regarding content distribution rights. Therefore, we anticipate and expect that viewers from various countries will soon be able to enjoy the show alongside the Korean audience’.
